A striking lithograph by Ernst Barlach from his 'Der Findling' series, depicting a surreal and tense pursuit between a boy and a personified bell.
Ernst Barlach, a central figure in German Expressionism, produced this lithograph as part of his series illustrating his own literary work, 'Der Findling' (The Foundling). The narrative follows a fantastical and somewhat unsettling sequence where a bell, personified and imbued with agency, pursues a young boy. Barlach, known primarily for his sculpture, applied a similar sense of physical weight and tension to his graphic works.
The composition captures a moment of frantic motion. The boy is depicted in a state of flight, his posture conveying urgency as he navigates the uneven terrain. Behind him, the bell is rendered with a heavy, almost anthropomorphic presence, its form surging forward through a cloud of swirling, textured lines. Barlach uses the lithographic medium to create deep contrasts, employing dense charcoal-like marks to build the mass of the bell and the surrounding atmosphere. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the interaction between the two figures to dominate the visual field.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of folklore, human emotion, and the grotesque. Barlach often explored themes of isolation and the struggle against unseen or overwhelming forces. The drawing style is direct, prioritising the emotional weight of the scene over precise anatomical accuracy. The lines are energetic and rough, mirroring the chaotic nature of the pursuit. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Barlach focuses the viewer on the psychological tension inherent in the narrative. This print offers a glimpse into the artist's unique ability to translate literary concepts into stark, evocative visual imagery, maintaining a consistent aesthetic that bridges his sculptural practice and his work on paper.
