A portrait of a young Venetian woman by Eugene de Blaas, capturing a quiet moment of daily life in the early twentieth century.
Eugene de Blaas, also known as Eugenio de Blaas, was a prominent figure in the Venetian school of painting during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Born in Albano, near Rome, he spent much of his career in Venice, where he became a professor at the Academy. His work often focused on the daily lives of the Venetian working class, particularly young women, rendered with a high degree of technical precision and a polished finish characteristic of the Academic tradition.
In this 1908 composition, a young woman leans against a weathered brick wall, a common architectural feature in Venetian canal scenes. She is depicted with a relaxed posture, her gaze directed towards the viewer. The artist employs a soft, diffused light that illuminates her features and the folds of her clothing. Her attire, consisting of a simple blouse, a yellow skirt, and a patterned shawl, reflects the modest dress of the period. Beside her, the inclusion of a ceramic jug and a copper bucket provides context for her role as a watercarrier, a common sight in the city before the installation of modern plumbing.
De Blaas was known for his ability to capture a sense of calm and grace in his subjects. The background, featuring the faint outlines of Venetian buildings, remains slightly out of focus, ensuring that the figure remains the primary subject. The application of paint is smooth, with minimal visible brushwork, allowing for a realistic representation of textures, from the rough surface of the brickwork to the soft fabric of the shawl. This piece reflects the artist's interest in genre painting, a style that sought to document the social realities of the time through a lens of aesthetic beauty and technical mastery.
