A contemplative, atmospheric study of the British coastline by Victor Pasmore, featuring soft tones and a focus on the interplay of light and water.
The Wave, painted by Victor Pasmore around 1939, captures a transitional moment in the artist's career. During this period, Pasmore was a central figure of the Euston Road School, a group that favoured a return to observational painting and a rejection of the more extreme forms of continental abstraction. This work demonstrates his interest in the atmospheric qualities of the British coast, rendered with a soft, muted palette that prioritises mood over precise detail.
The composition is structured around the horizontal bands of the sea, sky, and shoreline. Pasmore uses thin, layered brushwork to create a sense of depth and light, particularly in the way the sun reflects upon the water. The forms are simplified, moving away from strict realism towards a more subjective interpretation of the scene. The dark, block-like structure on the right provides a grounding element against the fluid, ethereal movement of the waves and the hazy horizon.
This piece reflects the artist's early engagement with the tradition of J.M.W. Turner and James Abbott McNeill Whistler, both of whom influenced his approach to light and colour. Unlike his later, purely abstract constructions, this work maintains a clear connection to the physical world while hinting at the formal experiments that would define his later output. The application of paint is delicate, allowing the texture of the canvas to contribute to the overall effect of the image. It is a quiet, contemplative work that avoids dramatic gestures, focusing instead on the subtle shifts in tone and the interplay between the solid land and the shifting sea. The work remains a representative example of British painting in the late 1930s, balancing the requirements of representational art with an emerging interest in the formal properties of the medium.
