This engraving, dated 1571, depicts the biblical narrative of the journey to Emmaus. Philips Galle, a prolific Dutch engraver and publisher, executed this work based on a design by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The composition shows Christ walking between two disciples, all three dressed as pilgrims with staves and cloaks. The figures occupy the foreground, while the background suggests a simple, open terrain.
Galle employs a precise, controlled line technique characteristic of the period. The cross-hatching defines the folds of the heavy garments and the contours of the faces, creating a sense of volume and weight. The central figure of Christ is distinguished by a subtle halo, while the disciples are rendered with individualised features and expressions of earnest conversation. The Latin inscription at the base provides a theological context for the scene, framing the journey as a model of faith and devotion.
As a publisher, Galle was instrumental in disseminating the visual language of the Northern Renaissance across Europe. His collaboration with Bruegel demonstrates the technical skill required to translate complex painterly designs into the medium of print.
