This etching by Max Liebermann depicts the interior of a workshop, focusing on the labour of textile production. Liebermann, a central figure in German Realism, frequently turned his attention to the lives of rural workers during the late nineteenth century. The composition captures a weaver at his loom, accompanied by a figure operating a spinning wheel in the foreground. The scene is defined by the interplay of light filtering through the window and the shadows cast within the cramped workspace. Liebermann’s approach to this subject avoids idealisation. He documents the physical environment of the weaver with precision, noting the mechanical apparatus and the posture of the workers.
