A detailed Persian miniature from a 16th-century Shahnama manuscript, depicting a royal wedding scene with traditional architectural motifs and gold leaf accents.
This miniature painting originates from a manuscript of the Shahnama, the epic poem by the Persian poet Firdausi. It depicts the wedding night of the Sasanian king Anushirvan and the daughter of the Khaqan. The composition follows the traditional conventions of the Safavid school, employing a high viewpoint that allows the viewer to observe multiple interior spaces simultaneously. The scene is divided into distinct zones: a large gathering of courtiers and attendants on the left, and the private royal chamber on the right, where the couple rests upon a raised dais.
The artist uses a flattened perspective, prioritising the clarity of the narrative and the decorative quality of the architecture over realistic depth. The walls are adorned with geometric tile patterns, while the floor is covered in carpets featuring floral motifs. The figures are rendered with fine brushwork, their garments displaying a variety of colours and textures. Gold leaf is applied to the margins and throughout the architectural details, reflecting the luxury associated with royal commissions of the period.
Calligraphic text is integrated into the composition, appearing in panels above and below the main illustration. This text provides the narrative context for the visual scene, linking the literary tradition of the Shahnama with the visual arts. The use of colour is balanced, with muted earth tones providing a backdrop for the brighter pigments used in the clothing and the intricate patterns of the interior. This work represents the technical precision and stylistic consistency found in late sixteenth-century Persian manuscript illumination, where the collaboration between calligraphers and painters produced highly refined objects for the royal court.
