Albert Bierstadt, a central figure of the Hudson River School, produced this study of the Wetterhorn during his formative years in Europe. Having studied at the Düsseldorf Academy, Bierstadt adopted the precise draughtsmanship and dramatic lighting characteristic of the German school. This work captures the imposing scale of the Swiss Alps, a subject that occupied his attention before he turned his focus to the American West.

The composition employs a classic tiered structure. In the foreground, dark, silhouetted evergreens frame the view, creating a sense of depth that draws the eye toward the valley floor. The middle ground reveals a pastoral scene, with small structures and winding paths suggesting human presence within the vast natural environment. Above, the snow-capped peaks of the Wetterhorn dominate the horizon, rendered with careful attention to the play of light on glacial surfaces.
