A striking example of American urban realism, this 1913 work by Robert Spencer captures the textured facade of a tenement building with expressive brushwork.
Robert Spencer, a member of the New Hope School, produced this work during a period when he turned his attention toward the realities of urban life. Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on the idyllic scenery of Pennsylvania, Spencer chose to document the humble, often overlooked structures of industrialised towns. The White Tenement captures a multi-storey building, its facade weathered and stark, set against a textured sky.
The composition relies on a heavy application of paint, creating a tactile surface that mimics the grit of the environment. Spencer employs a palette of muted tones, punctuated by the stark white of the building and the laundry hanging in the foreground. This detail provides a sense of human presence within an otherwise imposing architectural frame. The brushwork is deliberate, building up the form of the tenement through short, rhythmic strokes that unify the structure with the surrounding earth and foliage.
This painting reflects the artist's interest in the intersection of social observation and painterly technique. By choosing a subject that lacks traditional beauty, Spencer invites the viewer to consider the aesthetic qualities of everyday architecture. The work avoids sentimentality, presenting the tenement as a solid, unyielding object in the light. It remains a clear example of how the techniques of Impressionism were adapted by American artists to depict the specific character of their own surroundings, moving away from the pastoral towards a more grounded, observational approach to the built environment.
