A 16th-century Mughal miniature from the Tuti-nama, depicting a narrative scene of deception between a woman and a monk.
This miniature painting originates from the Tuti-nama, or Tales of a Parrot, a significant manuscript commissioned during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. The work depicts a narrative scene from the tenth night of the cycle, where the wife of a vizier's son presents a wooden parrot to her lover, a monk, who subsequently swaps it for a replica.
The composition follows the conventions of mid-sixteenth-century Mughal painting, which synthesised Persian stylistic elements with indigenous Indian artistic traditions. The scene is divided into two distinct zones: the upper portion contains Persian nasta'liq script, providing the textual context for the visual narrative below. The lower register illustrates the interaction between the two figures. The woman stands in a profile pose, dressed in traditional attire, while the monk sits within a structured pavilion, his posture suggesting a calm, deliberate exchange.
The colour palette employs earthy tones for the background, contrasted by the saturated pigments used for the figures' garments and the architectural details of the pavilion. The artist, Lalu, demonstrates a focus on narrative clarity, using gesture and spatial arrangement to convey the specific plot point of the exchange. The figures are rendered with fine lines, typical of the period's manuscript illustrations, where the goal was to complement the written word rather than provide a realistic depiction of space.
This piece offers a view into the courtly culture of the Mughal Empire, where literature and visual art were closely linked. The Tuti-nama itself is a collection of fifty-two stories told by a parrot to its mistress to prevent her from committing adultery while her husband is away. This specific folio captures a moment of deception, reflecting the moral complexities often found in these traditional tales.
