An ink drawing by Aubrey Beardsley, 'The Woman in the Moon' features two figures and a melancholic moon rendered in Beardsley's signature black-and-white style.
Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898) was a British illustrator and author, associated with the Aesthetic movement. His drawings are known for their decadent, grotesque, and erotic subjects, and their heavy use of black ink and sinuous lines. Beardsley's career was short but influential; he died of tuberculosis at the age of 25. His work influenced Art Nouveau and the development of graphic design. 'The Woman in the Moon' is a black-and-white illustration featuring two figures standing on a stark, undulating surface. To the left, a large, anthropomorphic moon with a melancholic expression dominates the background. A nude male figure stands in the centre, his body rendered with delicate lines. To his right, a woman in a flowing gown looks towards him. The composition is sparse, with the figures and moon set against a blank background, emphasising the linear quality of the drawing. The overall effect is one of otherworldly beauty and subtle eroticism, typical of Beardsley's style.
