Vincent van Gogh's watercolour drawing, *The Yellow House*, painted in 1888, captures the house he rented in Arles. The work is characterised by its bright colours and loose brushstrokes, reflecting Van Gogh's Post-Impressionist style.
Painted in 1888, Vincent van Gogh's watercolour and pen drawing, *The Yellow House*, depicts the house he rented in Arles, France. Van Gogh arrived in Arles in February 1888, seeking a refuge from the Parisian art scene and hoping to establish an artistic community. He rented four rooms in the east wing of the building, located at Place Lamartine 2, which he referred to as the 'Yellow House' because of its colour. The painting shows the house from across the Place Lamartine, capturing its distinctive yellow facade and green shutters. The composition includes the surrounding buildings, street, and figures, providing a sense of the urban environment. Van Gogh's use of colour is notable, with the bright yellow of the house contrasting against the blue sky and surrounding buildings. The scene is rendered with loose, expressive brushstrokes, characteristic of his Post-Impressionist style. The drawing offers a glimpse into Van Gogh's life in Arles and his vision for creating a space for artistic collaboration.
