An early engraving by Albrecht Dürer depicting a dramatic, allegorical encounter between a young woman and a personification of Death.
This engraving by Albrecht Dürer, titled The Young Woman Attacked by Death, belongs to the early period of his career. It depicts a macabre encounter between a young woman and a personification of mortality. The figure of Death, rendered with wild hair and a gaunt, skeletal appearance, grasps the woman from behind. She turns her head in a gesture of resistance or alarm. The composition is framed by a barren tree on the left and a large, empty scroll above, which remains blank, inviting the viewer to contemplate the nature of the scene.
Dürer employs precise, fine lines to define the textures of the woman's clothing and the rugged anatomy of the skeletal figure. The background features a sparse, atmospheric treatment of the horizon, typical of his early printmaking experiments. The work draws upon the memento mori tradition, a common theme in European art during the late fifteenth century. It serves as a reminder of the fragility of human life and the inevitability of the end. The contrast between the youth of the woman and the decay represented by Death creates a tension that is characteristic of Dürer's early allegorical works.
Technically, the print demonstrates Dürer's mastery of the burin. He uses cross-hatching to create depth and shadow, particularly in the folds of the woman's dress and the dark recesses behind the figures. The empty scroll is a notable feature, often interpreted as a space intended for a motto or text that was never added. This print remains a significant example of the artist's early engagement with moral and philosophical subjects, executed with the technical rigour that would define his later career in Nuremberg.
