Claude Monet's 1874 painting, *The Zuiderkerk, Amsterdam*, captures a view along an Amsterdam canal with the quick, broken brushstrokes characteristic of Impressionism. Light shimmers on the water, and the buildings are suggested with dabs of colour.
Claude Monet (1840-1926) was a founder of French Impressionism, the art movement that shifted painting from historical, mythological, or realistic subjects toward capturing fleeting moments and the effects of light and colour. Monet is celebrated for his series of paintings depicting water lilies, haystacks, and the Rouen Cathedral, each exploring variations in light and atmosphere. His use of broken colour and visible brushstrokes became hallmarks of the Impressionist style. Painted in 1874, *The Zuiderkerk, Amsterdam* depicts a view along one of Amsterdam's canals, dominated by the tower of the Zuiderkerk (Southern Church). The scene is rendered with the quick, broken brushstrokes characteristic of Impressionism. Light shimmers on the water, and the buildings are suggested with dabs of colour rather than precise lines. The overall effect is one of atmosphere and transience, capturing a specific moment in time. The painting exemplifies Monet's interest in urban subjects during his brief stay in the Netherlands.
