"There it goes" by Francisco Goya, an etching with aquatint from Los Caprichos, critiques Spanish society through satire and dark humour, depicting two figures in flight with expressive lines and stark composition.
Francisco Goya's "There it goes" is an etching with aquatint, created in 1799 as part of his series, Los Caprichos. This collection of 80 prints offers a critical view of Spanish society during the late 18th century, addressing themes such as superstition, ignorance, and the abuse of power. Goya employed satire and dark humour to expose the follies and vices of his time. The series reflects the influence of the Enlightenment, as well as Goya's own observations and experiences. In this particular print, two figures are depicted soaring through the air. One appears to be a witch or demonic figure, carrying another individual on their back. The composition is stark, with a monochromatic palette that enhances the unsettling atmosphere. The figures are rendered with expressive lines and shading, conveying a sense of movement and unease. The landscape below is suggested with minimal detail, focusing attention on the central figures and their ambiguous journey. The inscription at the bottom reads "Allí vá eso" ("There it goes").
