A fine engraving from William Blake's Illustrations of the Book of Job, depicting the restored patriarch with his daughters.
This engraving is plate 20 from William Blake's Illustrations of the Book of Job, a series produced towards the end of his career. The composition depicts Job, now restored to prosperity, surrounded by his three daughters. Blake employs a central, symmetrical arrangement where Job sits with his arms outstretched, his daughters gathered at his feet and sides. The scene is framed by smaller, circular vignettes that depict various biblical episodes, creating a narrative structure that extends beyond the primary subject.
Blake uses fine, controlled lines to define the figures and the surrounding decorative borders. The text, integrated directly into the design, provides context from the biblical narrative. The figures possess a classical grace, typical of Blake's later work, while the surrounding motifs of musical instruments and foliage add a decorative quality to the page. The contrast between the central scene and the surrounding text and ornamentation demonstrates Blake's mastery of the copperplate medium. He balances the weight of the written word with the visual density of the illustrations, ensuring that the viewer engages with both the narrative and the aesthetic form.
As a printmaker, Blake was meticulous, often overseeing every stage of the production process. This work reflects his personal interpretation of the Book of Job, focusing on themes of redemption and familial harmony. The clarity of the line work and the deliberate placement of each element demonstrate his technical precision. This piece is a representative example of his late-period graphic work, where his vision became increasingly refined and symbolic. The inclusion of the publication details at the bottom confirms its status as a finished print intended for a wider audience, rather than a private sketch. It remains a significant example of British printmaking from the early nineteenth century.
