A 1915 oil painting by Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, featuring a striking red-toned figure and horse rendered in the artist's signature spherical perspective.
Kuzma Petrov-Vodkin, a figure of early twentieth-century Russian art, produced this work in 1915. The composition displays the artist's characteristic use of spherical perspective, a technique he developed to represent the curvature of the earth within a two-dimensional plane. The scene depicts a central male figure in a striking red hue, holding a spear and standing beside a white horse. To the right, other figures appear to be wading into the water. The colour palette is deliberate, contrasting the warm, saturated red of the human forms against the cool, deep blues and greens of the surrounding environment.
Petrov-Vodkin often incorporated elements of religious iconography and classical mythology into his work, blending them with modern stylistic concerns. The figures are rendered with a sense of weight and volume, yet they occupy a space that feels dreamlike and detached from conventional reality. The horse, a recurring motif in his oeuvre, acts as a bridge between the human subjects and the natural world. The painting reflects the artist's interest in the synthesis of form and colour, moving away from strict realism toward a more symbolic interpretation of the human condition. The stark separation between the foreground figures and the distant, dark water creates a tension that invites the viewer to consider the narrative implications of the scene. This piece remains a clear example of the artist's unique approach to composition and his ability to manipulate colour to evoke a specific atmosphere.
