Description

A woodblock print from the Sanjūrokkasen series by Katsukawa Shunshō, featuring a classical poet paired with elegant calligraphy.

This print originates from the Sanjūrokkasen, a series depicting the thirty-six classical Japanese poets. Katsukawa Shunshō, a master of the Katsukawa school, produced these works during the mid-Edo period. The composition follows the traditional format of an illustrated book page, pairing a visual representation of a poet with their respective waka poetry written in fluid calligraphy. The figure is depicted from behind, seated upon a patterned mat. The artist employs a delicate line quality to define the folds of the elaborate robes and the screen partition. The screen features a subtle phoenix motif, rendered with precision. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft tones to balance the starkness of the paper. Shunshō avoids excessive ornamentation, focusing instead on the posture and the spatial relationship between the poet and the surrounding architectural elements. This work reflects the conventions of the period, where literature and visual art functioned as a unified experience. The calligraphic text on the right page occupies a significant portion of the composition, creating a visual rhythm that complements the seated figure. The print demonstrates the technical capabilities of woodblock printing in the eighteenth century, particularly in the handling of fine lines and the integration of text with image. By focusing on the quietude of the subject, the artist captures a moment of contemplation. The work provides insight into the aesthetic values of the time, where simplicity and literary allusion held high regard. It is a representative example of the refined output associated with the Katsukawa school, which moved away from the exaggerated features of earlier ukiyo-e styles toward a more naturalistic approach to the human form.
