A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II, depicting the serene moat and fortifications of the Soto Sakurada district in Yedo.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II depicts the Soto Sakurada area of Yedo, modern-day Tokyo. It is part of the series titled Thirty-six Views of Yedo, which documents the urban geography and atmosphere of the city during the late Edo period. The composition focuses on the moat surrounding the outer perimeter of the castle grounds, a common subject for artists of the era who sought to capture the intersection of natural features and military architecture.
The print employs a clear division of space, with the water of the moat occupying the lower half of the frame. The banks rise steeply on either side, covered in sparse vegetation and punctuated by pine trees. In the distance, the long, low walls of the castle fortifications stretch across the horizon, topped by a small watchtower. The sky is rendered with a subtle colour gradient, transitioning from a pale yellow near the horizon to a soft blue at the top, suggesting the quiet light of dawn or dusk.
Two figures are visible in the lower left foreground, walking along the path that follows the water. Their presence provides a sense of scale to the massive earthworks. The use of colour is restrained, relying on the characteristic blue of the water and the muted greens of the slopes to create a sense of calm. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where multiple woodblocks were used to layer colours and define the contours of the scene. This work offers a view into the historical topography of Yedo, documenting the physical environment before the rapid modernisation of the Meiji era altered the city's appearance.
