A classic 1862 Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige II, capturing the autumn foliage and river scenery of Takinogawa in Edo.
This woodblock print is part of the series 'Thirty-six Views of Yedo', produced by Utagawa Hiroshige II in 1862. The composition depicts the Takinogawa area during the autumn season, a location celebrated for its maple trees and scenic river valley. The artist employs a vertical format to capture the steep, ochre-toned cliffs that frame the winding blue water below. A small wooden bridge connects the banks, providing a sense of scale against the natural topography.
In the foreground, a teahouse structure with a thatched roof offers a space for visitors to observe the changing foliage. The colour palette relies on the contrast between the deep blue of the stream and the warm, autumnal tones of the maple leaves. The print demonstrates the technical conventions of the Ukiyo-e tradition, including the use of cartouches for the series title and the specific location name. The sky is rendered with a subtle gradient, a technique common in mid-nineteenth-century Japanese printmaking to suggest atmospheric depth.
Utagawa Hiroshige II, a student of the master Utagawa Hiroshige, continued the production of topographical prints that documented the environs of Edo. This work reflects the period's interest in travel and the appreciation of seasonal beauty. The print is characterised by clean lines and a balanced arrangement of architectural and natural elements. It provides a view into the aesthetic preferences of the late Edo period, where the depiction of famous sites served both as a record of geography and a source of visual pleasure for the urban population.
