A refined 1766 portrait by John Singleton Copley, depicting the Boston merchant Thomas Boylston II in a silk banyan.
This portrait depicts Thomas Boylston II, a prominent merchant from Boston, captured by John Singleton Copley in 1766. Copley, the most accomplished painter in colonial America, demonstrates his technical precision through the rendering of textures, particularly the sheen of the silk banyan and the gold embroidery that adorns the garment. The subject is shown in a relaxed, informal pose, wearing a soft cap, which was a common fashion for gentlemen in their private studies during the eighteenth century.
The composition is balanced, with Boylston seated at a desk, a quill in his hand, suggesting his professional life as a merchant. The dark, muted background ensures that the viewer focuses on the subject, while the subtle play of light across the fabric demonstrates Copley's ability to replicate material qualities. This work belongs to a period when Copley was refining his ability to convey both the status and the individual character of his sitters. The painting remains a primary example of colonial portraiture, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the wealthy merchant class in pre-Revolutionary America.
Copley moved to London in 1774, where he continued his career with great success, but this portrait remains firmly rooted in his American period. The attention to detail, from the inkwell on the table to the delicate lace at the cuffs, provides a clear view into the material culture of the time. The portrait is held in the collection of the Harvard Art Museums, where it is studied for its contribution to the history of American portraiture and its documentation of the Boylston family.
