This portrait by Joseph Wright (1734-1797) depicts Thomas Day, an English author and advocate for Rousseau's educational theories. Wright, known as Wright of Derby, gained recognition for his paintings of industrial subjects and his mastery of chiaroscuro. He spent his career primarily in Derby, though he also worked in Liverpool and Bath. He was elected as an associate of the Royal Academy in 1781 and a full member in 1784. In this painting, Day is portrayed in a relaxed pose, leaning against a classical column. He wears an open-necked shirt and a shimmering gold-toned jacket, draped with a reddish-brown cloak. His expression is thoughtful, and he holds a stack of papers in his left hand. The background features a stormy sky, adding a sense of drama to the composition.
