A detailed engraving by James Basire the Elder, depicting Thomas Howard, Earl of Arundel, based on an original portrait by Peter Paul Rubens.
This engraving by James Basire the Elder depicts Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel, a figure of significant standing in the seventeenth-century English court. Basire, a member of a prominent family of engravers, produced this work after a painting by Peter Paul Rubens. The print captures the Earl in armour, reflecting his status as a military and political leader.
Basire employs precise line work to render the textures of the metal plate, the fabric of the collar, and the subtle contours of the subject's face. The technique demonstrates the technical rigour associated with the Basire workshop, which was responsible for many reproductions of historical portraits during the eighteenth century. The composition follows the conventions of formal portraiture, with the subject turned slightly to the side, his gaze directed towards the viewer.
The background is kept dark and relatively simple, ensuring that the focus remains on the facial features and the reflective surfaces of the armour. The framing of the print includes a decorative border, a common feature in eighteenth-century reproductive engravings. This piece provides an example of how historical figures were memorialised through the medium of print, allowing for the wider circulation of images that were originally confined to private collections. The work remains a study in the translation of oil painting into the monochromatic language of the copperplate engraving, where light and shadow are managed through the density and direction of the incised lines.
