A striking 1910 portrait by Robert Henri, featuring a young boy in a bold red coat set against a deep green background.
Robert Henri, a central figure of the Ashcan School, painted this portrait of a young boy named Thomas in 1910. The work demonstrates his characteristic approach to portraiture, which prioritised the immediate psychological presence of the sitter over academic finish. Henri favoured a direct, painterly technique, often applying pigment with visible, energetic brushwork that captures the vitality of his subjects.
The composition is striking in its use of colour. The boy wears a garment of intense, saturated red, which contrasts sharply against the deep, verdant green of the background. This juxtaposition of complementary colours creates a sense of visual tension and draws the viewer directly to the subject. Thomas is depicted with his arms crossed, a pose that suggests a quiet confidence or perhaps a momentary impatience typical of childhood. His gaze is steady and direct, engaging the viewer without artifice.
Henri studied in Paris at the Académie Julian and was heavily influenced by the works of Frans Hals, Diego Velázquez, and Édouard Manet. These influences are evident in his loose handling of paint and his focus on capturing the essence of a personality. Unlike the formal, highly polished portraits common in the late nineteenth century, Henri sought to reveal the humanity of his subjects. He often painted children, finding in them a natural sincerity that aligned with his artistic philosophy. This portrait remains a clear example of his ability to balance formal composition with an expressive, modern sensibility. The background, while simplified, provides a sense of space and atmosphere that prevents the figure from appearing isolated, grounding him within the frame through the use of dark, moody shadows.
