Description
Thornton Force in North Yorkshire drops from a limestone ledge above Ingleton, its broad white curtain framed by layered cliffs, leafy banks and clear blue pools among scattered boulders.
On the River Twiss north of Ingleton, Thornton Force belongs to the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail. The fall exposes a notable geological boundary, where younger horizontal limestone rests above much older tilted rocks, making the cliff important for understanding the region's geological history.
A wide white cascade drops from the left ledge into turquoise water. Angular grey rocks line the pool and break the foreground stream into small rapids. Green trees crown the cliffs, contrasting with warm pink-grey stone and dark recesses beside the falling water. Full leaves suggest summer, with strong daylight reaching the open gorge beneath cream clouds.
