A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Kitagawa Utamaro, featuring three celebrated beauties of the Edo period in a refined triangular composition.
Kitagawa Utamaro produced this iconic woodblock print during the Edo period. It depicts three celebrated women of the time, known for their beauty and social standing in the pleasure districts of Edo. The central figure is Tomimoto Toyohina, flanked by Naniwaya Kita and Takashima Hisa. Utamaro was famous for his focus on the female form, specifically his okubi-e, or large-headed portraits, which allowed for a closer examination of facial features and expressions.
The composition uses a triangular arrangement to group the three figures. Their hairstyles and kimonos are rendered with precise lines, reflecting the fashion of the era. The background is kept minimal, a common technique in ukiyo-e to ensure the viewer focuses entirely on the subjects. The subtle colour palette relies on soft tones, which contrasts with the bold black ink used for the hair and the outlines of the garments.
This work is a classic example of the bijin-ga genre, which translates to pictures of beautiful women. Utamaro moved away from the full-body depictions common in earlier prints, opting instead for a more intimate, psychological approach to portraiture. By focusing on the specific identities of these women, he elevated the status of the print from a generic fashion plate to a recognisable portrait. The print remains a primary example of the technical skill involved in multi-block printing, where each colour required a separate carved block to achieve the final result. The balance between the figures and the empty space demonstrates the refined aesthetic sensibilities of the late eighteenth-century Japanese print tradition.
