Alfred Wallis, a Cornish fisherman turned painter, produced this work during his later years in St Ives. His approach to art is defined by a lack of formal training, which allowed him to bypass traditional perspective in favour of a personal, intuitive mapping of the sea. Wallis often painted on scavenged materials, such as cardboard boxes or scraps of wood, using limited palettes of household paint. This choice of medium is characteristic of his practice, where the physical constraints of the surface often dictated the arrangement of the vessels.

In this composition, three distinct watercraft occupy a grey, textured expanse of water. The ships are rendered with a focus on their essential forms rather than realistic detail. The absence of a horizon line creates a flattened, map-like view of the harbour.
