A charming lithograph by Théodore Géricault depicting three children interacting with a donkey, rendered with precise line work and classic Romantic-era style.
This lithograph by Théodore Géricault captures a candid moment of childhood play. The composition features three children interacting with a donkey in front of a stone wall, which is adorned with a carved lion-head fountain. Géricault, known primarily for his large-scale oil paintings of dramatic subjects, also produced a significant body of lithographic work during his time in London and Paris. This piece demonstrates his ability to observe everyday life with a direct, unadorned eye.
The artist employs a clean, linear style, using hatching to define the forms of the children and the animal. The donkey stands centrally, acting as the anchor for the scene, while the children are positioned to create a sense of movement. One child sits atop the animal, another pulls at the bridle, and the third stands behind, gesturing with a small tool. The background is kept minimal, focusing the viewer on the interaction between the figures. The lion-head fountain provides a subtle architectural detail, grounding the scene in a specific, perhaps urban or courtyard, setting.
Géricault’s lithographs often explored themes of labour, animals, and the human condition. While this work lacks the intense emotional weight of his major canvases, it remains a clear example of his technical skill in printmaking. The use of lithography allowed him to experiment with tonal variations and line work, which he applied here to create a balanced, narrative image. The print reflects the artist's interest in the physical presence of his subjects, whether human or animal, and his capacity to render them with anatomical accuracy. This work is a fine example of early 19th-century French printmaking, showing the artist's versatility beyond his more famous, darker compositions.
