A precise geometric composition by Max Bill, exploring the mathematical relationship between colour, proportion, and spatial balance.
Max Bill, a central figure in the development of Concrete Art, produced this work in 1952. The composition adheres to the principles of mathematical precision and objective clarity that defined his practice. Bill studied at the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he absorbed the school's focus on functionalism and the reduction of form to its essential components. This painting demonstrates his interest in the relationship between colour, proportion, and spatial organisation.
The work is constructed from a series of rectangular blocks arranged around a central white square. The title provides a direct instruction for the viewer, noting the specific distribution of black and white elements in relation to the three chromatic areas. Bill avoids subjective expression, preferring instead to allow the interaction of the colours to dictate the visual experience. The red, green, and purple sections are balanced by the surrounding black and white fields, creating a stable, non-hierarchical structure.
In his writings, Bill argued that art should be a product of the human mind, free from the influence of nature or emotional projection. This piece is an example of his pursuit of a universal visual language. The flat application of paint and the sharp edges of the rectangles remove any trace of the artist's hand, reinforcing the objective nature of the composition. By limiting the palette and strictly controlling the geometry, Bill invites the viewer to observe the mathematical logic governing the canvas. The work functions as a self-contained system where every element is dependent on the others for its position and visual weight. It remains a clear example of the mid-twentieth-century movement towards total abstraction, where the canvas is treated as a site for the investigation of pure form and colour relationships.
