A modernist composition by Bauhaus artist Oskar Schlemmer, featuring figures reduced to geometric, architectural forms.
Oskar Schlemmer, a central figure at the Bauhaus school, consistently explored the relationship between the human body and the surrounding space. In this work, the figures are reduced to geometric, almost architectural components. The composition reflects his preoccupation with the figure as a mechanical entity, a theme he famously developed through his work in the Bauhaus stage workshop and his Triadic Ballet.
The painting presents a controlled, staged environment. The figures are not depicted in a naturalistic manner but are instead simplified into smooth, rounded volumes. Their features are minimal, and their postures are rigid. This approach removes individual personality, allowing the viewer to focus on the formal arrangement of shapes and the interplay of light and shadow. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted tones that reinforce the sense of order and detachment.
Schlemmer viewed the human form as a mathematical problem to be solved within the confines of a three-dimensional space. By integrating the figures with furniture-like elements, he blurs the distinction between the organic body and the inanimate object. This synthesis is characteristic of his broader artistic project, which sought to reconcile the human element with the industrial and technological advancements of the early twentieth century. The resulting image is one of stillness and precision, typical of the Bauhaus aesthetic that prioritised clarity, function, and the reduction of form to its essential components. The work invites an analysis of spatial depth and the way in which human presence can be translated into a series of calculated, geometric relationships.
