A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Albert Flamen, depicting three greater weever fish on a shoreline with a maritime background.
This etching by Albert Flamen depicts three greater weever fish (Trachinus draco) resting upon a sandy shore. Flamen, a Flemish artist active in Paris during the mid-seventeenth century, produced a significant body of work focused on aquatic life. His prints often combined scientific observation with the conventions of the period, placing specimens within a recognisable coastal environment.
The composition features the fish in the foreground, rendered with precise lines to capture the texture of their scales and the structure of their fins. The background provides a sense of place, showing a calm sea with small sailing vessels and a distant shoreline featuring modest structures. This inclusion of a maritime setting suggests the origin of the specimens, grounding the biological subject in a human context.
Flamen utilised the etching technique to achieve varied tonal qualities, from the fine hatching on the fish bodies to the lighter, more open lines of the sky and water. The work includes the Latin and French names for the species, 'Araneus' and 'La Vive', alongside the Roman numeral 'VIII', indicating its place within a larger series of prints dedicated to fish and crustaceans. These series were popular among collectors of natural history curiosities during the seventeenth century. The print reflects the period's interest in the systematic classification of the natural world, while maintaining the aesthetic sensibilities of Dutch and Flemish printmaking. The balance between the detailed foreground and the atmospheric background demonstrates Flamen's technical proficiency and his ability to merge empirical study with artistic composition.
