A refined wood engraving by Timothy Cole, depicting the biblical scene of the three Marys at the tomb in a style reminiscent of early Renaissance masters.
Timothy Cole was a master of the wood engraving technique, a medium he used to translate the tonal qualities of paintings into black and white prints. This work depicts the biblical scene of the three Marys encountering an angel at the empty tomb of Christ. The composition draws inspiration from early Renaissance masters, reflecting the stylistic influence of artists such as Fra Angelico. The figures are arranged with a sense of quiet solemnity, their garments rendered with precise, controlled lines that define the folds of fabric and the weight of their forms.
The angel sits upon the stone sarcophagus, a central figure whose presence is marked by a halo and wings. The background features a stark, rocky formation that provides a sense of place without distracting from the primary narrative. Cole employs a variety of line weights and cross-hatching to create depth and shadow, demonstrating his technical command over the wood block. The contrast between the light-coloured halos and the darker tones of the robes and landscape creates a balanced visual hierarchy.
Cole spent much of his career in Europe, where he produced a series of engravings based on the Old Masters for The Century Magazine. His approach was not merely to copy, but to interpret the spirit of the original works through the specific constraints of engraving. This print captures the stillness of the moment, focusing on the emotional gravity of the encounter. The clean lines and structured composition reflect the aesthetic values of the late nineteenth and early twentieth-century printmaking tradition. It is a fine example of the precision and technical skill that defined Cole's professional output, offering a clear view into the methods used to disseminate art history to a wider public during this period.
