Alfred Wallis, a Cornish fisherman who began painting in his late sixties, produced works that possess a raw, immediate quality. He worked primarily on scavenged materials, such as cardboard boxes and scraps of paper, using limited palettes of household paint. His lack of formal training allowed him to bypass traditional perspective, resulting in compositions where the scale of objects is determined by their importance to the narrative rather than their distance from the viewer.

In this depiction of a three-masted schooner, the vessel dominates the frame. The ship is rendered with a focus on its structural components, with the sails and rigging occupying the majority of the pictorial space. The sea is represented by rhythmic, horizontal bands of blue and white, which convey the movement of water through simple, repetitive brushwork.
