A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Torii Kiyonaga, depicting women in a traditional Edo-period bathhouse with elegant, elongated figures.
Torii Kiyonaga was a master of the Ukiyo-e school, particularly recognised for his depictions of tall, graceful figures. This print belongs to the series A Brocade of Eastern Manners (Fuzoku Azuma no nishiki), which captures scenes of daily life in Edo-period Japan. The composition offers a glimpse into a public bathhouse, a common social space of the era. Kiyonaga organises the space with clear architectural lines, separating the bathing area from the dressing quarters.
The figures are rendered with the artist's signature elongated proportions, which lend a sense of poise to their movements. Unlike the more stylised or exaggerated forms found in earlier Ukiyo-e, Kiyonaga presents these women with a naturalistic grace. They are shown in various stages of the bathing ritual: washing, drying, or tending to a child. The use of colour is restrained, relying on soft tones that harmonise with the wood grain texture often visible in these prints.
Kiyonaga avoids clutter, allowing the viewer to focus on the interaction between the figures and the domestic objects, such as the wooden buckets and the bamboo partitions. The print functions as a record of social customs, documenting the attire and habits of women in the late 18th century. By placing the figures within a structured, multi-level environment, Kiyonaga demonstrates his skill in managing complex spatial relationships. This work remains a representative example of the mature style of the Torii school, reflecting the aesthetic preferences of the urban population in Edo.
