George Frederick Watts produced several versions of this allegorical composition throughout his career. The work depicts three figures moving forward in a unified procession. Time is represented as a youthful, muscular man carrying a scythe, his gaze fixed ahead with an expression of urgency. Beside him, Death appears as a woman draped in white, her head bowed in a state of quiet resignation, carrying a lap full of flowers that signify the fragility of life. Behind them, the figure of Judgement looms, holding a pair of scales aloft. The composition relies on a dramatic use of light and shadow to define the forms, with the figures emerging from a dark, atmospheric background.

Watts intended this work to communicate universal truths regarding the human condition. By personifying these abstract concepts, he moved away from the specific narratives common in Victorian art, opting instead for a more philosophical approach.
