An 1802 etching by Joannes Bemme after a design by Dirk Langendijk, depicting a man leading a horse through a rustic doorway.
This etching, dated 1802, serves as the title print for a series of horse studies. The composition features a man leading a horse through a rustic doorway set into a weathered brick wall. The work is a collaboration between the draughtsman Dirk Langendijk, who provided the original design, and the engraver Joannes Bemme, who executed the etching. The inscription on the stone plaque above the door explicitly credits both contributors, a common practice in printmaking of the period to distinguish between the inventor of the image and the technician who translated it into copper.
Bemme employs a precise, controlled line to render the textures of the scene. The brickwork, the rough timber of the door frame, and the musculature of the horse are defined through varied hatching and cross-hatching techniques. The lighting is naturalistic, casting soft shadows that give the scene a sense of depth and physical presence. The figure of the man is partially obscured by the horse, creating a quiet, everyday moment rather than a grand narrative. This focus on domestic or rural life is characteristic of the Dutch tradition, which often found beauty in the mundane details of agricultural labour.
As a title print, the work balances decorative elements with functional information. The plaque provides the necessary context for the series, while the surrounding scene establishes the thematic focus on equine subjects. The print demonstrates the technical proficiency of Bemme, who was well-regarded for his ability to capture the nuances of light and texture in black and white. The composition remains grounded in the observational style of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, prioritising clarity and anatomical accuracy. This print offers a glimpse into the collaborative nature of print production in the Netherlands during the early nineteenth century, where artists and engravers worked in tandem to produce high-quality series for collectors and enthusiasts.
