A detailed 1625 allegorical engraving by Adriaen van de Venne, illustrating the life stages of a woman for Jacob Cats's book on marriage.
This engraving serves as the title page for Jacob Cats's influential work, Hovwelick (Marriage), published in 1625. The composition is a complex allegorical arrangement that visualises the various stages of a woman's life as described in the text. At the centre, a large scroll displays the title and lists the six primary stages: maiden, wife, bride, mother, widow, and spinster. These stages are depicted in vignettes surrounding the central text, showing figures in contemporary seventeenth-century Dutch attire engaged in activities appropriate to their life phase.
The print is rich in symbolic detail, characteristic of the moralising literature of the period. Putti, or cherubic figures, hover above and below the central scroll, acting as messengers or observers of the human condition. The inclusion of a tomb in the lower right corner, complete with skulls, provides a memento mori, reminding the viewer of the transient nature of life. The artist, Adriaen van de Venne, was a frequent collaborator with Jacob Cats, and his ability to translate the poet's didactic verses into visual form was essential to the popularity of the book. The etching technique allows for fine detail in the clothing and the expressions of the figures, while the overall layout maintains a balance between text and image. This work provides a window into the social expectations and moral frameworks of the Dutch Golden Age, where domestic life was often framed through religious and philosophical lenses. The print is not merely decorative, but functions as a visual index for the reader, guiding them through the moral arguments presented in the subsequent chapters of the book.
