A 1793 Neoclassical title page engraving for The Iliad of Homer, featuring the linear, minimalist style of British sculptor John Flaxman.
This engraving serves as the title page for the 1793 edition of The Iliad of Homer, featuring compositions by the British sculptor John Flaxman. Flaxman created these designs while residing in Rome, where he became deeply immersed in the study of classical antiquity. The work reflects the Neoclassical aesthetic, which prioritised clarity, restraint, and a return to the linear purity of Greek vase painting.
At the centre of the composition, a circular medallion depicts a figure seated behind a large eagle, which clutches a bundle of arrows. The surrounding text is presented in a clean, formal typeface, typical of the period's book design. To the left and right of the central emblem, small, precise sketches of classical motifs provide a sense of archaeological rigour. The engraving was executed by Thomas Piroli, who worked closely with Flaxman to translate his delicate pencil drawings into the medium of print.
Flaxman's approach to these illustrations was revolutionary for the time. By stripping away the atmospheric effects and heavy shading common in contemporary art, he focused entirely on the expressive potential of the outline. This method allowed the narrative clarity of Homer's epic to take precedence over decorative excess. The result is a work that feels both scholarly and accessible, capturing the spirit of the Enlightenment's fascination with the classical past. The print is a fine example of the collaborative process between artist and engraver, demonstrating the technical precision required to maintain the integrity of Flaxman's original vision. Its minimalist aesthetic continues to appeal to those who appreciate the intersection of literature and visual art.
