This work is the title page illustration for the 1905 edition of Alexander Pushkin's The Tale of Tsar Saltan, created by the Russian illustrator and stage designer Ivan Bilibin. Bilibin was a central figure in the Mir Iskusstva (World of Art) movement, which sought to revive Russian folk traditions and decorative arts through a modern lens.

The composition features a central cartouche containing the title in stylised Cyrillic lettering, which mimics the appearance of Old Church Slavonic script. This central panel is set against a repeating background of stylised floral motifs. Bilibin employs a distinct graphic approach, characterised by precise black outlines and a flat application of colour. This technique draws inspiration from traditional Russian woodblock prints, lubok, and medieval manuscript illumination.

The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted blues, ochres, and creams to create a sense of historical authenticity. The decorative border demonstrates Bilibin's interest in the rhythmic repetition of organic forms, a hallmark of his graphic style. By integrating typography with ornamental design, Bilibin treats the entire page as a unified graphic object. This approach reflects his broader interest in book design as a cohesive artistic endeavour, where text and image exist in balance.
