A detailed 1785 etching by Gerrit Groenewegen, serving as the title page for his series on Dutch maritime vessels.
This etching serves as the title page for Gerrit Groenewegen's series, Verscheide Soorten van Hollandse Vaartuigen (Various Types of Dutch Vessels). Produced in 1785, the work captures the maritime culture of the Netherlands during the late eighteenth century. Groenewegen, a Rotterdam-based artist, possessed a deep understanding of nautical architecture, which he documented with precision throughout his career.
The composition features two figures positioned beside a large, upright stone slab that functions as the title plate. The text, presented in both Dutch and French, identifies the series and the artist. One figure sits on the ground, smoking a pipe, while the other stands holding a long pole, perhaps a boat hook or measuring staff. In the background, the skeletal frame of a ship under construction is visible, providing context for the technical nature of the series. The etching demonstrates Groenewegen's ability to combine human interest with the rigorous documentation of shipbuilding practices.
Groenewegen lost his leg in a childhood accident, yet he became a prolific draughtsman and etcher. His work remains a primary source for historians studying the evolution of Dutch maritime design. The lines are clean and deliberate, characteristic of the etching techniques employed by professional printmakers of the period. The scene is devoid of unnecessary ornamentation, focusing instead on the clarity of the subject matter. This print offers a glimpse into the working life of the Dutch ports, where the construction and maintenance of vessels were central to the economy and identity of the region. The inclusion of the ship's frame in the distance provides a sense of scale and purpose to the scene, grounding the figures in their professional environment.
