A 1582 engraving by Adriaen Collaert featuring mythological figures and ornate jewellery designs, reflecting the aesthetic of Northern Mannerism.
This engraving by Adriaen Collaert, dated 1582, serves as the title page for a series of designs for jewellery. The composition features two elaborate pendants suspended from ribbons, each depicting a mythological figure riding a sea monster. On the left, Apollo sits atop a creature, while Venus occupies the right. Below these figures, Neptune stands centrally, holding his trident, positioned above a cartouche containing the Latin title: BVLLARVM INAVRIVM ETC. ARCHETYPI ARTIFICIOSI.
Collaert, a member of a prominent family of engravers in Antwerp, produced this work during a period when the demand for pattern books was high among goldsmiths and jewellers. The print demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of Flemish engraving in the late sixteenth century. The figures are rendered with fine lines, capturing the musculature and movement of the deities, while the sea monsters exhibit a blend of naturalistic detail and fantastical design. The surrounding scrollwork and decorative elements reflect the Mannerist aesthetic, which favoured complex, imaginative forms over classical restraint.
As a design source, this print provided artisans with templates for creating wearable objects. The inclusion of pearls and gemstones in the visual design suggests the opulence expected in Renaissance jewellery. The work is not merely a decorative image, but a functional document of the period's material culture. The clear, structured layout allows the viewer to appreciate both the individual mythological narratives and the overall balance of the ornamental frame. This print remains a valuable record of how classical motifs were adapted for the decorative arts in the Low Countries, showing the intersection between fine art printmaking and the craft of the goldsmith.
