A striking abstract composition featuring a dense ink wash contrasted with precise yellow and green geometric forms.
This work presents a stark contrast between gestural, ink-based abstraction and precise geometric form. The central mass consists of a dense, dark ink wash that dominates the composition, suggesting a void or a heavy, atmospheric presence. The edges of this dark shape are defined by frantic, thin lines that extend outward, resembling skeletal structures or root systems. These linear elements provide a sense of kinetic energy, pulling the viewer's eye toward the periphery of the frame.
Within this dark field, two distinct rectangular blocks of colour appear: one in a bright, saturated yellow and the other in a vibrant green. These shapes are rendered with flat, opaque application, creating a sharp visual tension against the fluid, organic nature of the surrounding ink. The juxtaposition of the chaotic, hand-drawn ink marks and the rigid, mechanical rectangles suggests a dialogue between human emotion and structured order.
The title, To J.F.K. (A Thousand Roots Did Die With Thee), implies a commemorative or elegiac intent. The imagery avoids literal representation, opting instead for a symbolic language of loss and disruption. The ink work functions as a record of physical movement, while the geometric inserts act as anchors, preventing the composition from dissolving into total formlessness. This piece is a study in balance, where the weight of the dark, sprawling ink is countered by the deliberate placement of the two coloured forms. It invites the viewer to consider the relationship between memory, structure, and the remnants of a singular event.
