A refined Japanese woodblock print by Kubo Shunman, depicting a tobacco pouch and pipe alongside elegant calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Kubo Shunman is a fine example of a surimono, a genre of privately commissioned prints often exchanged among members of poetry circles. Shunman, a polymath active during the late Edo period, was known for his refined aesthetic and his ability to integrate calligraphy with visual imagery. This work depicts a tobacco pouch and a pipe, objects that were essential accessories for the fashionable urbanite of the time. The pouch features a decorative textile pattern, rendered with careful attention to the weave and floral motifs, while the pipe rests alongside it, suggesting a moment of quiet repose.
The composition is minimalist, placing the objects against a plain background to allow the viewer to focus on the textures and the accompanying calligraphic inscriptions. These poems, written in a delicate hand, add a layer of literary meaning to the visual subject matter. The print employs subtle colour gradients and precise registration, characteristic of the high-quality production standards expected for surimono. The use of soft, muted tones creates a sense of harmony between the written word and the depicted objects.
Shunman was a central figure in the development of the surimono format, often collaborating with poets to create works that functioned as both art and social currency. His approach to still life subjects avoids unnecessary clutter, preferring instead to capture the essence of the items through clean lines and balanced spacing. This print serves as a record of the material culture of the period, documenting the design of personal accessories while demonstrating the technical capabilities of the woodblock printing process. The paper quality and the preservation of the ink demonstrate the care taken in the original production, making this a representative piece of early nineteenth-century Japanese graphic art.
