Eglon van der Neer, a painter active during the latter part of the Dutch Golden Age, produced this depiction of the biblical narrative of Tobias and the Angel in 1690. The scene captures the moment the young Tobias, accompanied by the Archangel Raphael, traverses a stream. The figures are positioned in the foreground, with Tobias wearing a red garment and the angel draped in blue, both rendered with the precise brushwork characteristic of the Leiden fijnschilders, or fine painters, a group to which van der Neer belonged.

The setting is a wooded area, dominated by a large, gnarled tree trunk that anchors the right side of the composition. Beyond the figures, the view opens into a pastoral expanse featuring rolling hills and distant mountains under a pale, atmospheric sky. A small dog accompanies the travellers, adding a domestic detail to the religious subject. The lighting is soft, suggesting late afternoon, and it creates subtle reflections on the surface of the water where the figures stand.

Van der Neer was known for his versatility, moving between portraiture, genre scenes, and religious subjects.
