A historical photograph by Kassian Céphas documenting a traditional combat performance within the royal palace of Yogyakarta, Indonesia, circa 1890.
This gelatin silver print by Kassian Céphas captures a staged combat performance within the Kraton Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat, the royal palace of the Sultan of Yogyakarta. As the first professional photographer of Javanese descent, Céphas occupied a unique position in the history of Indonesian visual culture. He was appointed court photographer to the Sultan, granting him unprecedented access to document the ceremonial life, architecture, and traditions of the Javanese aristocracy during the late nineteenth century.
The composition depicts a group of performers engaged in a choreographed martial display, likely a form of Srimpi or Bedhaya dance, which often incorporates elements of combat. The figures are positioned in the open courtyard of the palace, surrounded by the distinctive pendopo structures that define Javanese architecture. The interplay of light and shadow across the courtyard floor and the surrounding trees provides a sense of the spatial environment of the Kraton. The performers wear traditional attire, their movements frozen in a moment of disciplined tension.
Céphas was highly regarded for his technical precision and his ability to document Javanese culture with a perspective that differed from the typical colonial gaze of his contemporaries. His work provides a visual record of the courtly traditions that were central to the identity of the Yogyakarta Sultanate. This print offers a view into a specific cultural performance, preserved through the lens of a photographer who was deeply familiar with the customs he recorded. The image serves as a historical document of the intersection between traditional Javanese performance art and the emerging medium of photography in the Dutch East Indies.
