A narrative scene from the life of Saint Benedict by Benozzo Gozzoli, depicting the meeting between the Ostrogothic King Totila and the saint.
This panel, painted by Benozzo Gozzoli around 1452, depicts a specific episode from the life of Saint Benedict. The narrative centres on the encounter between the Ostrogothic King Totila and the saint. Gozzoli, a pupil of Fra Angelico, employs a clear, narrative style that prioritises the legibility of the story over strict spatial realism. The composition is divided into two distinct groups: the secular retinue of the king on the left and the monastic community on the right.
Totila, dressed in contemporary fifteenth-century armour, kneels before the seated saint. His posture conveys a mixture of deference and curiosity. Saint Benedict, draped in dark robes, gestures towards the king, his expression calm and authoritative. The background features a pale pink church structure, which serves to anchor the scene within a recognisable, if stylised, ecclesiastical setting. The use of colour is deliberate, with the bright red of the king's armour contrasting against the muted, dark tones of the monks' habits.
Gozzoli was known for his ability to populate his works with figures that reflect the fashion and social hierarchies of his own time. This painting is part of a larger cycle illustrating the life of the saint, demonstrating the artist's skill in sequential storytelling. The figures are arranged with a sense of order, typical of the Early Renaissance period in Tuscany. The work remains a clear example of the transition from the Gothic tradition towards the more humanistic approach that defined the Italian Renaissance. The attention to detail in the clothing and the expressive gestures of the hands allow the viewer to follow the interaction between the two central figures without the need for complex perspective.
