Description

A woodblock print by Shōtei Hokuju depicting the Takanawa gate in Edo, featuring Western-style linear perspective and a view of Mount Fuji.

This woodblock print by Shōtei Hokuju captures a coastal view of the Shinagawa station along the Tōkaidō road. Hokuju, a student of Katsushika Hokusai, is recognised for his adoption of Western-style linear perspective, a technique known in Japan as uki-e, or floating pictures. This approach allowed artists to create a sense of depth that differed from traditional Japanese compositions.

The scene depicts the Takanawa Ōkido, a gate that marked the southern entrance to Edo. In the foreground, travellers and merchants navigate the shoreline, while small boats dot the water. The composition draws the eye across the bay toward the distant silhouette of Mount Fuji, which appears as a faint, pale form against the horizon. The use of a low horizon line and the receding lines of the shoreline demonstrate the artist's interest in European optical principles.

The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft blues, greys, and muted earth tones to convey the atmosphere of the coast. The sky occupies a significant portion of the print, filled with elongated, horizontal cloud formations that provide a sense of scale. The architecture of the buildings in the foreground is rendered with geometric precision, reflecting the influence of Dutch copperplate engravings that reached Japan via the port of Nagasaki. This work provides a view into the intersection of traditional Japanese printmaking and the influx of foreign artistic concepts during the Edo period. It is a study in spatial organisation, where the vastness of the bay contrasts with the activity of the travellers on the shore.
