A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige from his celebrated Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road series, depicting travellers at a teahouse in Totsuka.
This woodblock print is part of the series Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, often referred to as the Hoeido Tokaido. Utagawa Hiroshige produced this collection following his official journey along the route connecting Edo and Kyoto in 1832. The series gained popularity for its depiction of the various post stations, capturing the atmosphere of travel during the Edo period.
In this scene, Hiroshige depicts the fork at Motomachi in Totsuka. The composition centres on a teahouse, where travellers pause during their journey. A horse stands near the entrance, while figures in traditional attire interact with the establishment. To the right, a stone signpost indicates the direction of the road, and a pedestrian crosses a small wooden bridge. The background features a glimpse of the rural surroundings, rendered with the characteristic clarity of Hiroshige's style.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the ukiyo-e process. The use of colour blocks creates a balanced composition, with the architectural elements of the teahouse providing a stable frame for the activity of the travellers. The print captures a specific moment of rest, reflecting the daily rhythms of the Tokaido route. Hiroshige employs a clear spatial arrangement, guiding the viewer from the foreground activity toward the distant horizon. The work remains a primary example of the genre, documenting the social and geographical character of nineteenth-century Japan through the medium of the woodblock print.
