A detailed lithograph by David Roberts, capturing the town of Tiberias and the distant Lebanon mountains as observed during his 1839 travels.
This lithograph depicts the town of Tiberias, situated on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. David Roberts, a Scottish painter known for his extensive travels through the Near East, captured this view during his 1839 expedition. The composition balances the architectural remnants of the town with the expansive, arid geography of the region. In the foreground, figures rest upon stone ruins that extend into the water, providing a sense of scale against the distant, snow-capped peaks of the Lebanon mountains.
Roberts utilised a precise, observational approach to document the sites he encountered. His work often combined architectural accuracy with a romanticised atmosphere, achieved through soft washes and careful attention to light. The inclusion of local figures serves to animate the scene, grounding the historical structures in the daily life of the period. The muted colour palette, dominated by ochres, greys, and soft blues, reflects the atmospheric conditions of the Levant. This print is part of the broader collection of lithographs published after his travels, which introduced many British viewers to the geography and antiquities of the Middle East.
The technical execution of the lithography preserves the delicate quality of Roberts' original sketches. The interplay between the solid, weathered stone in the foreground and the hazy, distant mountains creates a sense of depth. The work remains a record of the region as it appeared in the mid-nineteenth century, documenting both the natural environment and the human presence within it. It is a clear example of the topographical art produced during this era, prioritising clarity and descriptive detail.
