A hand-coloured engraving by John James Audubon, 'Townsend's Rocky Mountain Hare' depicts two hares in a natural setting, showcasing Audubon's skill in animal illustration.
John James Audubon (1785-1851) was an American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter, notable for his extensive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats. His major work, *The Birds of America*, is a collection of 435 life-size watercolours of North American birds, published as a series of prints between 1827 and 1838. Audubon also painted mammals, publishing *The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America*. *Townsend's Rocky Mountain Hare* is a hand-coloured engraving from this later series. It depicts two hares in a natural setting. The hare in the foreground is lying down, while the other sits upright behind it. The background shows a distant mountain and some foliage, providing a natural context for the animals. The detailed rendering of the hares' fur and the subtle shading contribute to the realism of the image.
