Audubon also painted mammals, publishing *The Viviparous Quadrupeds of North America*. *Townsend's Rocky Mountain Hare* is a hand-coloured engraving from this later series. It depicts two hares in a natural setting. The hare in the foreground is lying down, while the other sits upright behind it. The background shows a distant mountain and some foliage, providing a natural context for the animals.
