A 1940 watercolour by Eric Ravilious depicting the view from a third-class railway carriage, featuring the Westbury White Horse in the distance.
Train Landscape, produced in 1940, captures the distinct perspective of a passenger looking out from a third-class railway carriage. Eric Ravilious employs his characteristic watercolour technique, using controlled, linear brushwork to define the interior of the train. The composition is structured by the vertical frames of the carriage windows, which act as portals to the rolling hills of the English countryside.
Within the windows, the view includes the Westbury White Horse, a chalk figure carved into the hillside. This inclusion provides a sense of place, grounding the scene in the geography of Wiltshire. The interior of the carriage is rendered with attention to the textures of the period, from the patterned upholstery of the seats to the wooden panelling and the leather strap hanging by the window. The number 3 is prominently displayed, identifying the carriage class, while the number 990 is visible on the woodwork.
Ravilious was known for his ability to find visual interest in mundane, everyday objects and environments. His work often bridges the gap between commercial design and fine art, reflecting his training at the Royal College of Art. The palette is muted, relying on ochres, greys, and soft blues to convey the atmosphere of a quiet journey. The perspective is flattened, which draws attention to the graphic quality of the scene rather than attempting a traditional illusion of depth. This work is held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, where it is recognised for its technical precision and its evocative portrayal of mid-twentieth-century British travel.
